Fragment van een strip getekend door Bushmiller, als antwoord op een brief van Beckett.
De vrolijke New Yorkse cartoonist Ernie Bushmiller en de diepzinnige schrijver Samuel Beckett hebben op het eerste zicht niet veel met elkaar gemeen. Toch hadden beide heren belangstelling voor elkaars werk, getuige een briefwisseling uit de jaren ’50. Beckett heeft net zijn Godot voltooid. Bushmiller maakt elke dag zijn immens populaire strip Nancy. Hoewel totaal verschillend van toon en timbre, delen beide heren toch een voorliefde voor de vagebond. Beckett bedenkt verschillende scenariootjes voor een strip, maar Bushmiller kan er niet echt mee overweg. Heel grappig is zijn commentaar op de deprimerende scenario’s van de aanstaande Nobelprijswinnaar:
“I have to say that some of the gags you come up with are a little depressing. They are simple, I will grant you that, but sometimes they don’t have that punchiness that I try to put in the strips, the kind you get right away and then it sends you zipping along. Do you know what I mean? Some of the stuff you come up with, I think it makes the reader linger, and that’s a sure fire way to lose readers. Nobody wants to get stuck on the funny pages. Let them get stuck in national news and the business pages and the editorials and the Help Wanted. They go over to the comics to forget all that stuff, not to get depressed.”
